• Climate Change adaptation - following up from March 31, 2007 workshop in Atlin provided in partnership with Northern Climate Exchange at Yukon College.
  Phase II in 2009-2010 provided through NCE and INAC;
  participating in the project and local advisory committee:
  A workshop in November 2009 gave insight into local vulnerabilities to climate events. The February Workshop will focus on potential areas and levels of climate and weather impacts and who would be dealing with them. It will also point to next steps in examining or correlating local emergency response plans. The Local Advisory Committee for this climate project has also obtained funding for a small project to scope out local interest in a Community Garden-Compost-Greenhouse facility to provide locally-grown food supplies. This could potentially be a benefit if climate-related events interupted delivery of supplies to Atlin.
• Monitoring and providing input on Community-based development and industrial development such as Yukon Energy's proposed control structure on Atlin River.
• Participating in Land Use Planning Community Engagement workshops: reviewing and commenting on materials presented.
• Support for community-based projects and direct volunteer involvement in other community groups such as Atlin Community Improvement District and Big Water Society.

Past Projects:

• Administered the Atlin STAR Recycling program while it was operating. The program closed due to lack of funding but operated successfully up to January 2009. Over 30 tonnes collected and shipped from this small but enthusiastic community! See www.bigwatersociety.org/Services for view of Recycling Day at Atlin Teen Centre.
• Volunteers attended Ruby Creek Liaison Committee and gave imput for CAMPP while Adanac was operating in Atlin.
• Atlin Arts & Music Festival - very involved in initial 3 years. Festival now has its own Society and is very successful under the ongoing guidance of Rick Newberry and other dedicated locals. Original stipulations: Family oriented, inclusive green event showcasing Atlin Visual Arts talent, the incredible musical talent available in the Atlin region, and the spectacular landscape. All these aspects have remained central to the event, although the musical talent has become international in scope.
• Atlin Ski Club - supported start-up and visiblilty of winter sports in Atlin.
• ESL in the Wild - developed outline of course to encourage wilderness English Second Language instruction, subsequently offered under NLC.
• Alternative Energy for Atlin - just after SASEI selected this as a goal, we discovered that TRTFN was already working on this issue. We applaud the successful completion and implementation of their Micro-Hydro project. We are all enjoying being off the diesel generators for electricity.

Mission Statement: To promote and encourage sustainability of the community and watersheds surrounding Atlin in such a manner and by such means as will provide for sustainable growth and socio-economic stability while preserving its wilderness setting, history and natural beauty.

Definition of Sustainability:
In terms of Atlin's economy, we define sustainability as being long-term, stable, diverse, community-based and ecologically sound.
